Rainbow Weather

The other day, my daughter, Kiana, and I were driving to the store to get her some lip balm. The sky was dark, cloudy, and sunny all at once. There was also rain and hail that was coming and going. It was the craziest thing. There is a tradition in our house called “rainbow weather”. Anytime it is rainy with sun breaks, we look for rainbows.

Rainbows are a rather curious thing. They are beautiful but need both rain and sun to form. Living in Washington state, one would think I am used to the rain, but they would be wrong. I don’t hate it as much as I used to, but I still prefer non-rainy days anytime. It’s like that with life, too. I want to see the beautiful promises of God fulfilled in my life, but I don’t want to go through the storms.

In the Bible, God placed rainbows in the sky after the rain as a promise that He would never again flood the earth (as He did in Noah’s day). So, when we see a rainbow, it’s a reminder of God’s promises to us, not just about flooding, but all His other promises as well. What are some of the promises we find in the Bible? Well, Google tells me there are 8, 810 of them, but here are a few.

• He will never leave you nor forsake you. (Deuteronomy 31:6)
• He plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)
• You may ask Him for anything in His name, and He will do it. (John 14:13-14)
• The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still. (Exodus 14:14)
• He gives us peace. We don’t have to be troubled or afraid. (John 14:27)
• He loves us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. (1 John 4:9-10)
• I can do all things through Him who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:13)

So, when the storms of life are blowing us around and the rain seems to never end, we can just think of it as rainbow weather and hold tight to His promises. The storm will cease eventually, and the sun will shine again. Keep an eye on the sky and look for rainbows.
