I used to love to watch the TV show, Hoarders. It always made me feel better knowing that my house wasn’t nearly as bad as theirs. Most times, you could look at the house from the outside and see that there was likely something wrong on the inside. Their hoard would spill over into their yard and driveway. But sometimes, the house looked good from the outside. The grass was mowed, there was no junk or debris, no cars up on blocks, nothing out of the ordinary. But the inside of the house was a totally different story.
Those are the two types of hoarders that I’ve seen on the show: ones whose outward appearance is messy and those who seem put-together. The same goes for the rest of us. Sometimes we look like we have everything all together on the outside, but our inner lives are a mess. Of course, sometimes, what’s going on inside shows on the outside, and we are an overall train wreck.
But when I think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a third type: people who’ve got it all together on the inside but look a mess on the outside. Wonder why that is? I guess if your heart and mind are at peace and in order then it shows on the outside.
How do we find this kind of peace? Philippians 4:6,7 says, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
So, if our hearts and minds are all cluttered and jumbled with junk, we can pray and present our requests to God with thanksgiving. Then we will receive the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. When you have that kind of peace on the inside, you can’t help but radiate it outwardly.
